hwachong talentime '05
"UNLEASH THE FIRE", says PA/AVA. i hardly could feel the heat of battle among the contestants. overall, the performances lacked that performance energy, let alone any hint of thermal energy coming from them. so 'cold', especially the emcees.
tonight's talentime is certainly a very fun topic to comment about. emcees aside, i feel that there is much to be done regarding stage set-up and the level of showmanship expected at a talentime FINAL.
i am totally against the way the sound system was set-up for the 2 band performances tonight. i certainly can't imagine why someone would mike up a guitar amplifier. c'mon, the amps are big and powerful enough to make sound (whether it's music or noise depends on the musician himself) that's audible for the whole auditorium to hear. result of this? the vocalist's singing became muffled by all the blaring guitar distortion and deep bass sound. on top of that, the drummer sounds as though he's playing very softly as there's only enough to mike up the bass drum. i feel the whole set-up would just be great if only the vocalist's voice is projected using the auditorium's speakers. else, leave them alone...
alright, let's move on to the vocal solo category. interestingly, each item was presented in some sort of special sequence : 1.piano + vocals, english; 2.chinese ; 3.piano accompaniment, italian *!?!*; 4.chinese; 5.piano + vocals, english. chinese songs have that crowd-appeal factor in hc so i think it's a wise choice of song, actually. the champion for vocal solo category went to chen jinjing, the 4th performer in this category. there is much emotion in her singing, which kind of lacked in other finalists of this category. or should i say, their emotions was not well-expressed =). i like weilin's song!"if i ain't got you" by alicia keys. the genre was a contrast compared to the other contestants, which i felt was very refreshing.
vocal group category produced the grand champion of talentime 2005 - LOVE. it was ann's group, who belted out their own rendition of "where is the love" by Black Eyed Peas. simply awesome! they're the only group that didn't start singing from the stage; they appeared from crowd, walking down the side aisles then proceeding towards the stage. another pair of girls presented "one night in beijing"... my eyes popped wide open when the girls tried to imitate the male vocal part in that song. definitely a "no no". gross. another pair presented the song "come what may" from 'moulin rogue'..but in the end they walked separate ways as they proceeded backstage. how contradicting to their song. oh, another acapella group worthy of mention, 'just the four of us' presented "sukiyaki" and "this i promise you". they rounded up their performance with a harmonised version of the 2 best words to say to anyone - thank you.
now, here comes the open category. there's this group who were ex-gymnasts performing basic routines...hello? it's talentime, at least perform something better even if it's gymnastics? the rap duo from 'bleached' was quite good. however, they didn't quite remove the background rapping by eminem in the track that they used so it sounded more like eminem rapping than the two of them doing it. sigh. there's this band who performed evanescence's "bring me to life". they had some serious technical set-up problem, which wasn't really their fault. their fault, i think, was to stick to closely to their rehearsed introduction when they could've earned points by trying to keep the crowd entertained while waiting for PA/AVA to fix the problem. the bass amp gave way (or perhaps the connection) halfway into their song and the bassist did nothing to solve the problem but pretended as if nothing happened and just played on. *sigh x 3*. the only item i enjoyed from the open category was the one by the chinese orchestra, who subsequently emerged as champion from the open category. very soothing piece that they played. nice ^-^
now i may sound very critical here, but music's music. these are my standards. many simple things could've been done just to make everything turn out better. also, i unluckily sat to this guy who has no plain manners at all. no respect for the people around him. after going through all these, i can only imply that hc has very little sense of showmanship and also their music taste is rather limited. =(
comments are welcome.
